We have cycles available for hire at both shops. City Centre Due to space limitations, hire bikes are only available from Bike Zone in the City Centre BY PRIOR BOOKING. (Our hire bikes are kept off-site and have to be brought in specially). We have two types of hire bike available from Bike Zone: Traditional Raleigh town bikes, fitted with a basket and rear carrier (two sizes of men’s and two sizes of women’s bikes available). These are ideal for running around between the colleges and University buildings, exploring the back-streets of Oxford and riding along the river tow-path. Available for rent by the day, week or term. (If you are going to be in Oxford for less than a year it may well be cheaper and less hassle to take out a bike on a long-term hire than to buy a bike together with a lock, lights, basket, etc.) Lightweight Ridgeback hybrid bikes, fitted with mudguards and rear pannier carrier, ideal for longer day rides and taking on a few hills - we can suggest routes for longer cycle rides around Oxford. Prices: Raleigh town bikes: 1 day £18 (extra days @ £6/day); 1 week £30 (extra weeks @ £15/week); Term hire (up to 12 weeks) - £60 (Deposit: £100) Ridgeback hybrid bikes: 1 day £25 (extra days @ £10/day); 1 week £50 (extra weeks @ £30/week); Deposit: £200). Pannier bags available to hire with these bikes Other Information The hire charge includes the loan of a good solid lock (and detachable lights if required). It is very unusual for hire bikes to be stolen, as long as they are secured to a solid object with the lock that we supply! We usually have supplies of the Oxford Cycle Map produced by Oxfordshire County Council (free of charge if we have them). We do not lend out or hire cycle helmets. (We do have them available for sale) General Advice and ‘Rules of the Road’ 1.Please note that the convention in the UK is for the front brake to be operated by the right hand brake lever. 2.When leaving the bike around the city, care should be taken to secure the frame of the bike to a solid object (such as a steel bike stand or railings) with the lock provided. If this is done properly it is unlikely that your bike will be stolen. 3.If you are using the bike at night (after lighting up time) you must have lights fixed to the front and rear of the bike. These will be provided by the shop on request at no extra charge (although you may have to pay for new batteries if they get used up during the hire period) 4.Use cycle lanes where they are available, but take care because they are not continuous for the full length of many roads into Oxford. Cyclists should not, generally use the pavements, unless there are signs to the contrary. 5.If you do not feel confident cycling in traffic, there are several alternative cycle routes around the city, through parks and by the river. Please ask for more details. We often have maps available. 6.If you plan a longer cycle ride out of the city, it is a good idea to take a spare inner tube, puncture repair kit and a few tools, as we do not have a “breakdown service” to come and rescue you if you get a puncture. A repair kit with the essential tools etc. can be hired for a couple of pounds. Cycle Hire: Terms & Conditions 1.The hirer (customer) agrees to take responsibility for the security and general condition of the cycle during the period of hire. 2.If the cycle requires any maintenance during the period of hire it should be brought back to the shop for priority repair. This will normally be free of charge to the hirer unless repairs are required because of accident damage or vandalism whilst the bike is out on hire, in which case it will be charged to the hirer at normal shop prices. In the case of a punctured tyre, customers are expected to carry out a repair themselves (or pay the shop to repair them), unless the puncture was caused by a faulty tyre, in which case the shop will carry out the repair free of charge. 3.Our hire prices are arranged so that customers who commit to a longer period of hire are charged a lower rate, but please note that these charges are payable in advance and we do not give refunds on hire charges if cycles are brought back early, nor do we send out hire bikes on a trial basis. Any extension of a period of hire must be agreed before the expiry of the original hire period, and charges must be paid for in advance. Charges will be applied as though the hirer was starting a fresh hire. In other words, if you want to hire a bike at our best rate for a certain period of time, you need to book it and pay for it all at the beginning of the hire period. 4.Hirers who bring a cycle back late will be charged at the daily hire rate for every day or part-day beyond the originally-agreed period of hire. (See hire rates displayed in shop). 5.If the hire cycle is lost or stolen whilst out on hire the hire deposit will not be refunded, nor will any replacement cycle be provided for the remainder of the period of hire. The hirer should report the theft to the police and the shop as soon as is practicable. |
