| FOLDING BIKES are great for extending the reach of other forms of transport. They can go in a car boot to provide a quick and inexpensive way of getting into the city from the Park & Ride. The smaller, lighter ones can be taken on the train and even underground trains. Boaters and caravanners use them because they are useful on holidays and don’t take up much storage space. They cost more than the equivalent quality non-folding bikes, so only buy a folding bike if you really need the folding facility. As a general rule, the smaller the wheel, the worse the ride quality. A good quality 20” wheel bike can ride almost as well as a bike with a full-sized wheel, but it won’t fold down as small as the 16” and 18” wheeled ones. Cheap folding bikes could put you off cycling completely, so don’t pay less than about £300 for a new one. |  |
